Korean Media: BYD Surpasses Tesla to Claim Top Spots in Two Markets!
On June 6, South Korean media outlet JoongAng Ilbo published an article stating that although Tesla once held over half of the market share thanks to its Model 3 and Model Y models, it has now been overtaken by a Chinese brand even in key overseas markets. The spotlight is shifting from what were once considered Tesla’s “home turf” — the UK and Australia — where leadership in the electric vehicle (EV) market appears to be transitioning toward China’s BYD.
According to U.S.-based EV media outlet Electrek, BYD has surpassed Tesla to become the top-selling EV brand in Australia, driven by the success of its new SUV, the Seal 7. Two years ago, two out of every three EVs sold in Australia were Teslas. However, BYD has rapidly risen in prominence, now ranking second overall among automotive brands — just behind Toyota.
The situation in the UK is similar. From January to April this year, BYD achieved cumulative sales of 12,754 units, surpassing both Tesla and Kia to become the best-selling EV brand in the UK. Electrek analysis noted: “BYD’s number-one ranking in the UK — Europe’s main EV hub — symbolizes the end of Tesla’s dominant era.”
Some analysts believe this reversal stems from Tesla’s aging product lineup combined with BYD’s strong value-for-money strategy. BYD has successfully captured various market segments by offering a diverse range of products, from entry-level models to luxury SUVs.
Meanwhile, one analysis points out that Tesla’s design and interior configurations now feel overly ordinary, while BYD enjoys overwhelming price competitiveness and delivers more luxurious interior materials and craftsmanship.
In response to the growing success of Chinese EV brands, Julie Delvecchio, Chair of the Australian Electric Vehicle Council, remarked that the market landscape has shifted: “Australian drivers are no longer asking whether EVs are the future; instead, they’re focused on which specific model to buy and when they can get their hands on it.”
BYD UK CEO Gubo Nuo also emphasized: “With high fuel prices, BYD is becoming consumers’ most sensible choice in the UK, thanks to its reasonable pricing and advanced technology.”
