China-made Tesla and BYD see growth in European sales
According to a report by Reuters (Japanese edition) on June 3: China-made Tesla sold 85,982 units in May, marking a 39.4% year-on-year increase. This marks the seventh consecutive month of growth, with an 8.2% increase compared to the previous month. New registrations across multiple European countries have rebounded, indicating a recovery trend following a brief downturn.
This data includes vehicles shipped from Tesla's Shanghai factory — namely the "Model 3" and "Model Y" — both domestically sold and exported to Europe and other regions.
Meanwhile, Chinese automaker BYD, a competitor to Tesla, also achieved strong exports to Europe and other countries, recording positive growth for the first time in nine months.
As competition shifts from price to performance, BYD has demonstrated its technological prowess by announcing last week that it will fully cover accident compensation and repair costs related to assisted driving for one full year.
At the same time, the use of autonomous driving features in China-made Teslas is awaiting approval from regulatory authorities.
