Robert Gilman, a former U.S. Marine Corps member detained by Russia for over four years, was released on Tuesday due to severe deterioration in his health and returned to the United States aboard a dedicated medical aircraft. Trump stated that, following negotiations with Putin, Russia granted Gilman humanitarian clemency without demanding the exchange of any detained individuals. The 32-year-old Gilman is currently conscious and able to speak, though he cannot walk, and is receiving medical care. His mother accompanied him back to the U.S. Gilman has been held by Russian authorities since 2022. Family members and human rights organizations have reported he suffered physical and psychological abuse; more than six weeks ago, he entered a state of "dissociative stupor," leading some to believe he might have died while in detention. Rubio welcomed Gilman’s release and simultaneously urged Russia to immediately free other Americans, including Stephen Hubbard, whom the U.S. considers wrongfully detained.
