Kyodo News: Changes in the Chinese Beef Market, US Imports Remain Weak, Competition Among Japan, Australia and Brazil Intensifies
Kyodo News, July 11 report, due to the tariff war with the Trump administration, US beef imports into China have remained weak. The retaliatory tariffs in March caused the import volume to drop by more than 30% and stopped importing from hundreds of US processing facilities. Countries such as Australia and Brazil have stepped up their sales, intensifying market competition; on the 11th, the relevant agreement for resuming the import of Japanese beef into China came into effect. A Tianjin trader said, "US beef is difficult to procure due to the tariff increase, and we are expanding our imports from Australia as an alternative," and predicted, "Japanese wagyu may be perceived as expensive, but the Chinese market is large, and it can sell well if the price is reasonable." A Shanghai supplier also revealed that the handling volume of US products has decreased by 50%, stating, "we are considering importing from Japan."
