Indian-made fighter jet crashes during aerial display

A Indian-made "Tejas" fighter jet crashed on Friday, November 21, during a low-altitude aerial display at the Dubai Air Show. The aircraft hit the ground and caught fire, with the pilot killed. The Indian Air Force said it would establish an investigation committee to thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident.

Witnesses said that the Tejas fighter jet crashed while flying low at around 2:15 p.m. local time. Reuters reported that this is the second crash involving this type of aircraft, the previous one occurring during a military exercise in 2024.

The Tejas fighter jet was manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, and its engine was provided by General Electric.

Currently, the main equipment of the Indian Air Force are Russian and former Soviet fighters, while the light fighter jet Tejas is intended to replace India's existing MiG-21 fighters. After more than two decades of development, the Tejas fighter jet finally made its successful debut in 2001. It is reported that the Indian Air Force will have nearly 220 Tejas fighter jets and its upgraded version, the Mk-1A model, within the next ten years.

This crash occurred on the last day of the Dubai Air Show, which is also the largest aviation event in the Middle East. In a statement, the Indian Air Force said: "An investigation committee is being established to determine the cause of the accident."
