Reference News Network, October 8 report. According to Sputnik News, on October 8, Alexei Maslov, Dean of the School of Asia and Africa at Moscow State University, stated that Chinese is becoming a practical tool for many professions in Russia.

The report said that Maslov pointed out that the enthusiasm of Russians for learning Chinese has increased by 10% to 15% each year over the past five years, and by an average of 18% each year in the past two years.

He also said that the motivation for learning Chinese has changed. Previously, people learned Chinese to become literary figures or Sinologists, but now Chinese has been regarded as a professional tool used in areas such as enterprises and government departments.

Maslov emphasized: "In fact, we have observed a similar development path as English. English is no longer just a subject, but a professional skill."

He said that currently, there is a particular need for people who master Chinese in the fields of business, digital technology, metallurgy, chemical industry, and information technology in Russia. However, only a few leading Russian universities can teach Chinese at a high quality.

He also pointed out that Russian primary and secondary schools lack Chinese teachers who can professionally teach students in the lower and middle grades.

The report said that according to the Moscow Department of Education and Science, Chinese is the second most popular foreign language in Moscow after English. Nearly 8,000 primary and secondary school students in more than 70 schools are studying Chinese within the framework of basic education, and another 6,000 students are taking extracurricular Chinese classes.
