Trump Says U.S. Granted Iran a One-Week Pause

President Trump stated that Washington had given Iran "a one-week pause" to hold funeral rites for its late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Speaking at a rally in South Dakota, Trump said: "We gave them a week to handle the funeral because we are good people."

Trump did not explicitly state whether negotiations were paused for a week, but these remarks came amid ongoing U.S.-Iran talks.

On February 28, attacks by the United States and Israel on Tehran resulted in Khamenei's death. Due to continuous strikes throughout March and an unclear ceasefire situation following an agreement in April, a farewell ceremony could not be held at the time, so the Iranian government decided to postpone the event, citing the need to prepare infrastructure.

On July 3, senior representatives from multiple countries attended Khamenei’s farewell ceremony. Commemorative events for the public began on July 4 and continued through July 9. The formal farewell ceremonies were held in Tehran from July 4 to 6. On July 7, the coffin was transported to Qom. On July 8, funeral processions took place in Karbala and Najaf—two major Shiite holy cities in Iraq. On July 9, Khamenei’s remains returned to Iran and were buried in his hometown of Mashhad.
