U.S. Media: Brazilian Consumers Are Increasingly Favouring Chinese Brands
According to a report on Bloomberg's website on May 13, during the scorching heat in February, Lucas Silva Ferreira, a resident of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, needed to purchase a new air conditioner to cool his home. He ultimately decided to buy an air conditioner from a Chinese brand instead of traditional brands like LG or Whirlpool.
The report stated that Ferreira spent 2,300 reais (approximately $400) on an air conditioner manufactured by Hisense, while a similar product produced by South Korea's LG was priced at around 4,100 reais. The model he chose not only had high energy efficiency but also offered more technological features compared to products at the same price point.
Ferreira, who is 30 years old, said, "For the product I wanted to buy, this one has the best cost-performance ratio and works very well. Traditional brands are much more expensive."
It was reported that as more and more Chinese products appear in Brazilian retail stores, Brazilian consumers' enthusiasm for Chinese products is also rising. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited China from May 10 to 14, holding talks with Chinese senior officials, and the economic relations between the two countries are becoming closer. During his visit in China, Lula said that the trade relationship between the two countries has unlimited potential.
In recent years, home appliances and electronic products made by Chinese enterprises have flooded into the Brazilian market. Chinese brands that originally sold televisions and mobile phones have begun to expand their product categories. Hisense, TCL, and Midea have successively launched products such as dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators.
It was reported that for Brazilian retailers, they are counting on Chinese goods to boost consumer demand that has been affected by economic slowdown. According to data from research firm NIQ, Chinese brands currently account for 20% of the electronics sold in Brazil, up from 16.5% in 2019. Chinese brands are competing with brands like LG, Samsung Electronics, Electrolux, Panasonic, and Whirlpool.
One of Brazil's largest retail chains, Grupo Comercial Bahia, said that since 2020, the share of Chinese manufacturers in its business has increased from 10% to 18%. With the arrival of new suppliers and products, the retailer expects this proportion will exceed 20% by the end of the year.
Retail industry analyst Gustavo Tsuchida said, "These Chinese companies are usually more proactive in commercial terms and pricing strategies, offering more attractive cooperation conditions." He added that this result could bring "higher profit margins" to Brazilian retailers.
According to information on related retailer websites, a Midea dishwasher costs about 3,229 reais, which is approximately 22% cheaper than a similar model from Electrolux. A TCL washing machine is priced at around one-third less than a similar product from Whirlpool. (Compiled/translated by Wu Mei)
