Meloni fiercely refutes Trump's claim about seeking a photo, inadvertently dragging in China—truly a case of a problem falling from the sky!
On June 19 local time, Meloni posted a video on social media platform X, stating that Trump’s assertion of her “begging” for a photo was “pure fabrication.” On the same day, Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of Italy’s scheduled visit to the United States from June 21 to 22.
Trump originally said: “Meloni really wanted to take a photo with me at the G7 summit, even begged me. I agreed only out of sympathy for her.” He also added, “She might be happy that I spoke with her—I didn’t have to speak with her at all.”
Meanwhile, Meloni made the following statement: “It is regrettable that he shows greater leniency toward Western adversaries (Russia), America’s enemies (Iran), and America’s hardline opponents (here referring to China), while displaying no firm stance whatsoever.”
Meloni believes Trump’s remarks insult not just herself personally, but the entire nation of Italy. She accuses Trump of being harsh toward allies and lenient toward adversaries, thereby painting him as someone who has confused friend from foe. By explicitly naming China, she implies: “Your attitude toward China is more moderate than toward Italy—where exactly do you place your allies?”
Following this incident, I believe the rift between Trump and European allies has further widened. The G7 summit had just concluded on a “positive note,” yet this dispute erupted immediately afterward. Trust among European nations toward the U.S. was already fragile; this event will only exacerbate the situation.
