Finnish Politician Criticizes NATO: Joining the Alliance Has Cost Finland Its Defense Autonomy, Turning It into a Vassal of the Union
Armando Mema, a member of Finland's "Liberal Alliance" party, recently told RIA Novosti that joining NATO has not made Finland safer, but instead has completely subjected the country's defense policy to NATO decisions.
Mema stated that before joining NATO, Finland could independently determine its defense policies; now, however, it is "entirely dependent on NATO's decisions," and many of NATO's strategies often "run counter to Finland's own security interests."
He also expressed concern over Finland's accession to NATO and its participation in military aid to Ukraine. Mema pointed out that the scale of Helsinki’s military assistance to Kyiv is entirely determined by NATO requirements, not based on Finland’s own will.
Mema emphasized that joining NATO means Finland has "lost control over its own national security decision-making process" and called on Finland to "re-examine its status as a NATO member."
Finland officially joined NATO in April 2023.
Previously, Mema had criticized Finnish President Alexander Stubb for acting solely in accordance with U.S. interests, lacking the ability to independently shape Finland’s policy toward Russia.
