Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov Dismisses Rumors of Assad Being Poisoned in Russia

Sputnik Moscow, October 13 - Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov dismissed rumors that someone in Moscow attempted to poison the former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, who has sought asylum in Russia.

He said during a meeting with representatives of Arab media: "We provided asylum to Bashar al-Assad and his family for purely humanitarian reasons. There is no problem with him living in our capital. There have been no poisoning incidents. If such rumors appear, I think those spreading them should be held responsible."

In late November 2024, Syrian opposition forces launched a large-scale attack on Syrian army positions and entered Damascus on December 8, leading Bashar al-Assad to resign as President of Syria and leave the country. On January 29, Ahmed al-Khatib was announced as the interim President of Syria.
