Japan makes major adjustments to its Air Self-Defense Force
Japanese media outlet TBS Television reported breaking news on April 24, stating that Japan will restructure its current "Air Self-Defense Force" into the "Air and Space Self-Defense Force," expanding its military scope to include outer space. This includes satellite command and control operations, missile warning systems, and space situational awareness. Its operational objectives will shift from "exclusive defense" to "outer space and integrated air-space combat."
The proposal was passed through votes in the House of Representatives and the Security Committee, and received approval from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito Party, as well as centrist opposition parties such as the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and the Reiwa New Party. The amendment also includes recommendations for organizational restructuring, such as increasing the number of Deputy Ministers at the Ministry of Defense from the current one to two.
