Japanese Media: Chery to Partner with Autobacs to Enter Japan's Electric Vehicle Market

According to a report from the "Yomiuri Shimbun" on May 11: Chinese automaker Chery has partnered with Japan's Autobacs Group, deciding to launch new domestically produced electric vehicles in Japan starting in 2027. Chery will leverage Autobacs' sales network to introduce low-cost electric vehicles to the Japanese market.

Chery has jointly established EMT (headquartered in Yokohama City) with four other Chinese and Japanese companies in 2025, participating in production, development, and sales. At EMT, Hiroshi Yamamoto—formerly involved in the development of Nissan’s first-generation Leaf EV—will serve as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), leading the development of a brand-new Chery electric vehicle tailored for the Japanese market.

According to research firm MarkLines, Chery’s domestic sales in China reached 1.41 million units in 2025, ranking seventh. Export volumes have surged to 1.29 million units, making it the highest among Chinese manufacturers and giving it a competitive edge in expanding its overseas presence.

EMT will not sell existing Chery electric vehicle models but will focus exclusively on developing new electric vehicles. In addition to Autobacs stores, the company plans to establish its own dealer network.

Autobacs will also provide after-sales services in Japan, including vehicle inspections and repairs.
