UK Media: Japan Airlines will begin testing humanoid robots for ground handling operations at Tokyo's Haneda Airport in May, for a period of two years, aiming to alleviate staff workload.
In the initial phase, the robots will handle cargo container loading and unloading; in the future, they may expand to cabin cleaning and ground equipment operation.
The Japanese aviation industry is facing dual labor shortages due to a surge in inbound tourists and a declining working-age population. The company currently has around 4,000 ground crew members.
Japan has already welcomed over 7 million foreign tourists in the first two months of this year. The president of Japan Airlines' ground operations stated that robots can take on physically demanding tasks, but safety management and other responsibilities still require human oversight.
