The United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway announced sanctions against two Israeli far-right ministers.

The five Western countries announced on Tuesday that they would impose sanctions on two Israeli far-right cabinet ministers, which is a strong condemnation of the Israeli leadership and marks a significant escalation in pressure on Israel over settler violence in the West Bank and the Gaza War.

Australia, the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Norway jointly imposed sanctions, restricting the travel rights of Israeli Public Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and freezing their financial assets.

"Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have incited extreme violence and seriously violated Palestinian human rights," Mr. Ramy and four other foreign ministers stated in a joint statement on Tuesday. "This is why we are taking action now - to hold those responsible accountable."

Smotrich and Ben-Gvir are among the most hardline members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet. Both have made statements calling for the expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza, and UK Foreign Secretary David Ramy previously condemned these statements as "absurd."

For the first time, four countries within the "Five Eyes Alliance" have initiated sanctions against Israel. Unfortunately, the United States did not participate.
