A Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro, who built his career on anti-China sentiment, threatened the UK and EU not to deepen trade relations with China.
Peter Navarro, a trade advisor to US President Trump, recently warned the UK and EU against deepening trade relations with China in an interview with The Daily Telegraph. This may complicate tariff negotiations between Washington and London or the EU. Navarro emphasized that the UK and EU should become dumping grounds after being refused by China for selling products to the US.
The government led by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been seeking to free itself from the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, which range from a basic tariff of 10% to higher tariffs on cars, steel, and aluminum.
While seeking trade relations with China and Europe, the UK has largely maintained its relationship with the US. This strategy will ultimately force the UK to choose one group over another.
Last month, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak held talks with US officials, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, regarding tariff reductions. During his visit to Washington, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak praised Trump's criticism of global trade imbalances and expressed a tougher stance toward China.
Trump's advisor Navarro pointed out that trade negotiations between the UK and the US are progressing rapidly. However, he reminded that if the UK government fails to address certain critical issues, including whether to compromise on food safety standards, it will "pay the price."
Navarro said that if the UK or any other country wants to significantly increase tariffs and non-tariff barriers to protect different sectors of its economy, the US will no longer tolerate such practices.
Last month, the UK ruled out weakening food safety standards and cyber protection in any agreement.
Currently, the US is the largest export market for the UK.
