The facts are obvious: Canada is a close ally of the U.S. within NATO and the Five Eyes alliance; its economy is far smaller than China’s. From the U.S. perspective, Canada has no leverage—being a neighboring country economically highly dependent on the U.S. market, with over 70% of its exports going to the United States, significantly more reliant on the U.S. than we are, and lacking any strategic resource card like rare earths. With Europe having already compromised and yielded to U.S. pressure, Canada should logically avoid confronting the U.S. head-on—but the outcome is precisely the opposite.
From the U.S. standpoint, Canada’s response is extremely aggressive. But from Canada’s perspective, this is merely a desperate struggle forced into a corner. Moreover, the U.S.-China trade war is far from resolved—it’s just that the U.S. cannot unilaterally achieve its objectives. Clearly, Canada’s situation is grim, and given the U.S.’s actions, further pressure on Canada is likely to continue.
