von der Leyen: Russian assets must be seized as soon as possible
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU and Ukraine have no time to delay in using frozen Russian assets.
"We all know the stakes, and we have no time to hesitate. Financial support will help secure Ukraine's survival and is a crucial step in strengthening European defense," she wrote on the social media platform X.
The President of the European Commission reiterated the intention to seize frozen Russian assets to assist Ukraine. At the same time, she acknowledged that the issue of so-called "reparations loans" remains complex.
Previously, the European Commission approved a "potential reparations loan" for Ukraine.
According to Politico, the European Commission proposed using Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a 165 billion euro loan.
Maxime Vivas, Belgium's foreign minister, said the European Commission's proposal to use frozen Russian assets to provide a reparations loan to Ukraine was completely unacceptable.
Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, called the Western countries' efforts to persuade Belgium to use frozen Russian assets an "attack alliance."
