Upon delivery, the ship will be renamed "Hnychevsk," in memory of a Ukrainian vessel lost in June 2022 while carrying out combat missions near the Kherson Spit.
This marks the second minesweeper provided by the Netherlands to Ukraine since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war. During the inspection, Zelenskyy awarded medals to Ukrainian sailors and Dutch Defense Chief Aehlshoek.
The "Alkmaar"-class minesweeper is regarded by Ukraine as a timely lifeline, closely tied to its unique operational capabilities. Designed specifically to counter modern mine threats, these vessels are equipped with advanced sonar detection systems, remotely operated minesweeping equipment, and blast-resistant hull structures. They can clear traditional mines such as moored and bottom mines in coastal areas, as well as deal with new-generation mines featuring intelligent detonation mechanisms. For present-day Ukraine, mine hazards in the Black Sea have long been a major obstacle limiting maritime supply lines and trade routes.
