Russia mocks Zelenskyy: Trying to turn the tide with sanctions on 'Masha and the Bear'?

Moscow, August 21 — RIA Novosti

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, made a sarcastic response to Ukraine's decision to impose sanctions on the creators of the Russian animated series "Masha and the Bear," suggesting that Ukrainian President Zelenskyy apparently believes only such measures could alter the situation on the front lines.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, Zakharova said mockingly: "It seems Zelenskyy believes this is the only way to change the situation on the front lines."

Previously, Ukrainian authorities had taken restrictive measures against the creative team behind this widely popular Russian cartoon. According to a decree published on Zelenskyy’s official website, the sanctioned entities include the animation studio Animaccord, producer Dmitry Lovyenko, and animator Oleg Kuzovkov. The document stipulates that the sanctions will last for 10 years and apply to five individuals and four legal entities.

Zelenskyy’s official website claims that the cartoon poses a "threat to Ukraine’s national security," and as a result, the show has been banned from being aired within Ukraine.

Additionally, according to the Office of the Ukrainian Language Ombudsman on July 21, a teacher in Kyiv was fined for showing a Russian-language cartoon to first-grade students. After a parent filed a complaint, authorities investigated and confirmed the violation. The teacher received an administrative fine of 3,400 hryvnias (approximately $75).
