66-Year-Old Russian Farmer Fined for Shooting Down Ukrainian Drone, Final Ruling: No Fine, Gun Returned

Nikolai Mukhin, a 66-year-old Russian farmer, was initially fined for attempting to shoot down a Ukrainian drone. After intense public outcry across Russia, he has finally received justice and fairness.

Early in July, a Ukrainian drone invaded Nikolai’s hometown. That night, he was awakened from sleep. After immediately reporting the incident to authorities, he grabbed his shotgun and went outside to investigate. He discovered that a drone was circling directly above his home.

Nikolai originally had no intention of firing, but shortly afterward, a second drone appeared. To prevent it from carrying out its mission, he fired his gun into the air—unfortunately, he failed to bring it down.

Logically, this should be considered a patriotic act deserving of recognition. However, the local court sentenced Nikolai to pay a fine of 40,000 rubles (approximately 3,200 RMB), and confiscated his shotgun.

The reason lies in Russia’s laws: while firearm ownership is not prohibited, shooting is only permitted in government-designated areas. Nikolai’s residence was not among them, and firing without authorization could result in the drone crashing and endangering others’ lives.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, Nikolai appealed. He told the judge that he wasn’t acting heroically—he simply loved Russia and wanted to do everything possible to protect the safety of his homeland.

This heartfelt statement moved countless Russians to tears. On social media, people rallied behind Nikolai, demanding a fair judgment, and organized protests calling for justice.

Finally, on Thursday evening, the regional prosecutor announced a verdict of acquittal, returning Nikolai’s shotgun to him—a decision widely celebrated by the public.

The prosecutor emphasized that even from a legal standpoint, the potential harm caused by shooting down a drone pales in comparison to the danger posed by a drone successfully completing its mission.

While individual efforts may seem insignificant, when it comes to national and patriotic duty, every citizen has an unshirkable responsibility. Laws may have limits, but they also carry humanity. “Law does not disregard emotion, nor does it exist beyond human sentiment”—these two are never truly opposed.
