[G7: Countries Supporting Russia Cannot Benefit from Ukraine's Reconstruction]
On May 22nd, the Group of Seven (G7) issued a joint statement stating that Russia and any country supporting its "military aggression" cannot benefit from Ukraine's large-scale reconstruction.
The statement pointed out that G7 will cooperate with Ukraine to ensure that "any country, organization, or entity funding or supporting Russia's war machine" cannot profit from Ukraine's reconstruction. Meanwhile, G7 emphasized the critical role of the private sector in reconstruction, pledging to help investors build confidence through bilateral and multilateral initiatives, including lifting restrictions on international insurance companies providing services in Ukraine as soon as possible.
G7 also stated that it will continue to coordinate support for Ukraine's early recovery and reconstruction, with relevant plans to be further advanced at the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference in Rome on July 10th and 11th. Ukrainian Prime Minister Shmygal estimated in February 2025 that the cost of rebuilding the country would be approximately 500 billion euros.
German Finance Minister Lindner emphasized during the G7 Finance Ministers' meeting that the group's support for Ukraine is "unwavering," and Ukraine can rely on the "strong unity and substantial support" of G7. The statement also mentioned that frozen Russian assets will remain in their current state until Russia halts its aggression and provides compensation; if a ceasefire is not achieved, G7 will continue to explore pressure tactics, including strengthening sanctions.
