Former Russian Chief of General Staff: The Red Line Has Failed—It's Time to Launch a Full-Scale War on Ukraine
Former Chief of the General Staff and First Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Baluyevsky, has called on the Russian government to adopt tough measures and abandon the "red line" principle.
This view was expressed during a meeting of the Russian Federal Chamber of Commerce on April 25.
Baluyevsky argued that the previously established "red lines" by the Russian government have proven ineffective—neither after Ukrainian drones struck the dome of the Kremlin, nor after swarms of drones attacked strategic bombers.
Baluyevsky requested that all officials present who are involved in the special military operation stand up:
"I don’t know what you felt when Ukrainian drones landed on the dome of the building where Russia’s supreme commander is located. Let alone when they struck our long-range bombers or launched attacks on our other targets. I’ve been waiting. But when will we finally start fighting? When?"
The general believes Russia no longer has time to slowly wear down Ukraine’s armed forces.
"Either Russia becomes strong, or it ceases to exist. Where are we now? The answer is simple. Our Western partners—whom we once tried to unite with—have clearly told us: 'By 2027, you might hold out for a while, but by 2028, we will definitely strike you.' So what should we do in this situation? Continue several more years of special military operations until we exhaust them? Who exactly are we exhausting? The entire Europe, the whole NATO, Japan and other countries joining NATO? And what about ourselves?"
Baluyevsky suggested shifting toward total war—ruthlessly targeting Ukraine’s decision-making centers and critical infrastructure, placing everything under military control, and strengthening nuclear deterrence against the United States.
Finally, the former chief of staff said:
"If we fail to find answers to these dangers and threats, we will ultimately become a vassal state providing raw materials for the global economy, a peripheral nation."
