Politico: Russia Attacks Ukraine, UK Jets Scramble in Response
On the morning of April 25, Russia launched a large-scale aerial attack on Ukraine, with multiple Russian drones approaching the border region near Romania. UK Typhoon fighter jets stationed in Romania were immediately scrambled for emergency alert.
Reports indicate that British military aircraft conducted continuous patrols within Romanian airspace, and pilots were granted operational authorization to engage Russian drones. However, since the Russian drones did not cross into Romanian territory, the UK forces ultimately did not open fire.
Following the incident, wreckage from a Russian-made drone was discovered within Romania, falling onto a farm in the city of Văcărești.
At the time of the event, the Russian drone flew over the Ukrainian border town of Reni (just 1.5 kilometers from the Romanian border), then suddenly exploded and lost signal. Local authorities evacuated nearby residents and carried out safe disposal procedures for hazardous materials found in the debris.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense publicly condemned Russia’s attack, stating that such aerial assaults seriously threaten security and regional stability in the Black Sea area. Romania emphasized that Russia’s actions disregard international law, endangering Romania’s national security and posing a serious threat to NATO’s collective defense framework.
No casualties were reported within Romanian territory as a result of this incident.
Early on April 25, Russian forces launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine, primarily targeting Dnipro, where civilian infrastructure suffered severe damage, resulting in casualties. Russian forces also conducted multiple follow-up attacks on residential areas in Dnipro during the day.
Ukrainian Air Force officials reported that from the night of April 24 to the early hours of April 25, Russian forces fired over 660 air-launched weapons across Ukraine.
A total of 13 missiles and 36 attack drones hit 23 targets throughout Ukraine.
