U.S. officials allege foreign involvement in incident at UK military base, leading to temporary arrest of five individuals by British police
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that signs of foreign interference have been confirmed in connection with an incident at RAF Fairford, a base used by U.S. forces.
Speaking on Fox News, Rubio said: “What may have occurred over the weekend in the UK represents a very serious situation. It is clearly linked to foreign intervention… I want to thank the UK authorities for their cooperation and assistance on this matter. More information will emerge in the coming days.”
Earlier, on Sunday, British police detained five individuals on suspicion of violating explosives legislation. Subsequent investigations confirmed all were British nationals. They were released on bail on Monday.
RAF Fairford is the only base in Europe capable of receiving U.S. strategic bombers. The site has previously hosted missions targeting Iraq and Yugoslavia.
In March, British authorities permitted the U.S. to use the base for operations against Iran. At the time, London emphasized that Washington could only deploy the facility for “defensive” purposes. Protests had previously taken place near the base, opposing U.S. military actions in the Middle East.
