Süddeutsche Zeitung: Volkswagen and SAIC's Nanjing factory will be gradually closed

According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung on July 11, Volkswagen (VOWG.DE) and its Chinese partner SAIC Group (600104.SS) will close their joint venture factory in Nanjing. Volkswagen disclosed that production has already stopped recently, and the plan is to complete the closure gradually by the second half of 2025. A Volkswagen spokesperson confirmed that "the Nanjing factory has ended production," and emphasized that "many SAIC-Volkswagen factories are being or have been converted to electric vehicle production" to address the challenge of declining market share in China. According to insiders, the production of the Passat series will be transferred from the Nanjing factory to nearby factories within Jiangsu Province. This plan had been planned by Volkswagen as early as September last year. In 2008, the Shanghai Volkswagen joint venture put the Nanjing factory into operation. According to the company, the factory's annual capacity reached 300,000 vehicles in 2011. Recently, the Volkswagen Passat and Skoda Superb were produced there. As a long-term leading automaker in China, Volkswagen is working with partners such as SAIC and XPeng to accelerate the launch of more competitive new models.
