German Chancellor Merz stated that Germany has become too costly and less competitive as a place to do business.
Speaking at the East German Economic Forum, Merz said: "We face a competitiveness issue in pricing. Even if not everyone wants to hear it, Germany has become too expensive. In many areas, we are no longer competitive because we can no longer match the prices offered by other regions around the world with which we compete." Phoenix Television broadcast the forum live.
According to him, Germany must once again become an attractive country for entrepreneurs. He pointed out that reforms are needed across multiple areas: corporate income tax, energy costs, bureaucracy, labor-related additional costs, digitalization, and infrastructure. He also emphasized the need for concerted efforts at the European level to enhance competitiveness.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes Germany, through investment in digital infrastructure, will become a nation independent of American and Chinese data centers.
Speaking at the East German Economic Forum, Merz said: "We are investing in digital infrastructure. Within five years, we will double Germany's existing computing capacity. I believe that relying on our own computing power, Germany will become a country independent of U.S. and Chinese data centers."
He noted that if Germany aims to develop artificial intelligence, it will require massive computing power.
Merz added: "The efficiency with which we develop and industrialize new technologies will decisively determine how secure, sovereign, and strong our country will be in terms of economic growth over the next decade."

Previously, Russian President Putin, when responding to a journalist’s question about direct negotiations between Russia and Europe, stated he personally prefers former German Chancellor Schröder, but emphasized that Europe should choose its own leaders—those they trust and who have not made negative statements against Russia. Putin stressed that it is Europe, not Russia, that refuses dialogue.
