Not a fantasy, but reality: When can we expect laser weapons to appear on the front line

Expert Zivov: Operational laser weapons are expected to appear on the front line within three years

Currently, laser weapons are mainly in the testing phase, but they may be more widely used on the battlefield within the next three years. This is the view of military analyst Alexei Zivov.

He said that laser technology has a promising future, especially in countering drones. However, the key issue is its high energy demand, which currently hinders the development of truly mobile laser weapon systems.

"Currently, laser weapons are only used for experiments. Most of them are not on the front line, but at sites where various weapon possibilities are being studied and tested,"

the analyst shared with the "Lianta Network" reporter.

He pointed out that China has already started producing series laser weapons, mainly for countering drones. Russia is also conducting related research and development work, but it is still mainly in the experimental stage.

Zivov further explained that Russian laser weapons are roughly divided into two categories. One is used to suppress control channels and video signals, while the other is used to cut the fiber optic lines of enemy drones.

"In general, I believe that laser weapons undoubtedly have a future, but any laser weapon requires a powerful energy source. And this is the main problem. In other words, if it is a fixed laser weapon powered by a powerful generator on a vehicle or off-road vehicle, it is possible, but a portable mobile laser weapon powered by batteries does not have enough power to burn the target instantly,"

the person interviewed by the online media said.

He emphasized that there have already been the first cases of the use of laser weapons in the special military operation area in Ukraine, and these technologies are expected to play an important role on the front line in the future.
