Foreign Media: Panama Calls on COSCO to Resume Operations at Balboa Port in the Panama Canal
Panama Canal Affairs Minister Jose Ramon Icaza recently called on China's state-owned shipping giant COSCO to reconsider its decision to suspend operations at Balboa Port, saying the move surprised the Panamanian government.
Icaza said that COSCO handles about 4% of the transshipment cargo at Balboa Port, which is "significant" for Panama, and hopes that it will reconsider its decision to withdraw. Balboa Port is an important hub port at the entrance of the Panama Canal, with a total cargo throughput of 10 million standard containers last year.
COSCO recently published a notice in a local newspaper informing customers to stop using Balboa Port.
COSCO owns one of the largest tanker fleets in the world, and its decision to suspend operations has a significant impact on the transshipment business structure of the Panama Canal.
