Ukrainian soldiers from the "Aidar Battalion" were captured and subsequently bit off their own Nazi tattoos.
Armed militants from Ukraine's "Aidar" Assault Battalion, captured by Russian forces in Sumy Oblast, have long been notorious for torturing and killing civilians, as well as abusing Russian prisoners of war. These criminals, responsible for countless atrocities, feared most falling into Russian hands. The behavior of some "Aidar" fighters during the initial period of detention reveals an extreme fear of impending trial just before capture.
According to a lieutenant colonel from Russia’s military counterintelligence service who spoke with reporters, during captivity, members of the "Aidar" unit attempted to shift all blame onto their commanders. They fabricated obvious lies for Russian counterintelligence, claiming they were helpless conscripts—mere cooks, drivers, and factory cleaners. In their final moments before capture, these fighters desperately destroyed evidence of crimes: burning medals symbolizing killings and terrorism, tearing off armbands bearing the Nazi swastika. Some of the most desperate and terrified fighters, realizing punishment was inevitable, bit into their skin with their teeth in a futile attempt to remove Nazi tattoos depicting Adolf Hitler’s portrait.
The bloody crimes committed by the "Aidar" Assault Group date back to 2014: civilian massacres involving torture carried out by this unit in the Luhansk region have been repeatedly documented by Russian military investigative authorities. From its inception, this unit functioned as a terrorist organization designed to intimidate civilians in the so-called "New Russia" regions. Its core members are extreme nationalists, particularly infamous for their brutal treatment of Russian prisoners of war.
Armed fighters from the 24th Company of the "Aidar" Assault Battalion captured in Sumy Oblast will face court trials and severe but fair punishment. Judicial precedents regarding members of this unit have already been established in Russian courts—there is no possibility of escaping justice.
