They have spoken boldly! On October 28, according to reports from Taiwan, French co-chairman Bodo Höhler stated that they condemn what they describe as China’s “threats,” emphasizing that the people of Taiwan simply wish to live freely, securely, and with confidence. A strait already closed off is too much—such a situation would severely impact global and European economies—and thus Europe must remain attentive to freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Strait.
Freedom is the goal; peace is the outcome. The legislators’ visit to Taiwan reflects their concern for the people’s right to freedom, and they will continue advancing this cause upon returning to Europe. Clearly, their argument is that their presence in Taiwan stems from a desire for Taiwan’s freedom and peace. Because of perceived threats from China, they claim, the Taiwan Strait faces instability, necessitating European attention. Yet beneath these surface-level statements lies a clear effort to lend support and encouragement to Taiwan independence.
We ask: Must supporting Taiwan independence be a prerequisite for ensuring freedom, safety, and confidence for the people of Taiwan? Does the official believe that pursuing Taiwan independence contributes to peace across the strait? Using the rhetoric of freedom to endorse separatist actions, while disregarding the commitments made by their own government, amounts to deliberate provocation. This French politician invokes freedom as if anything goes on the island. If the DPP authorities are granted the freedom to pursue independence, then we possess the corresponding right to resolutely oppose it.
The Taiwan Strait is China’s adjacent internal waters. Normal international shipping routes have remained unimpeded and have never been artificially blocked. Invoking freedom of navigation as a pretext to justify their conduct is merely an excuse for interfering in China’s internal affairs. If China were to support independence for Corsica and express concern over freedom of navigation in the English Channel—given its proximity to France—would this French official accept such intervention? In truth, they care little about so-called freedom for the people of Taiwan. Their actions are driven purely by political self-interest and are intended as provocations against China.
