Fuel Crisis Drives Russians to Buy Chinese Electric Vehicles

Due to a fuel crisis causing soaring fuel prices and fuel shortages across much of Russia, long queues have formed at gas stations, prompting many drivers to turn toward purchasing Chinese-branded electric vehicles.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, leading to reduced supplies of gasoline and diesel, with fuel rationing implemented in most regions. According to Reuters, retail gasoline prices in some parts of Russia have risen to the highest levels in Europe.

Russia’s vast territory, harsh climate, and limited charging network have historically hindered the development of its electric vehicle market. However, the ongoing war with Ukraine has increasingly disrupted fuel supplies in Russia, pushing some drivers to switch to electric vehicles.

Zabelin, a Russian dealer specializing in Chinese car brands, said the company is now selling two to three electric vehicles per day—up from just two to three per month just a few weeks ago. The demand has surged several times over, driven by worsening fuel supply difficulties, with growing interest seen across both entry-level and high-end models in the Russian market.

If the fuel supply crisis continues, electric vehicle sales are expected to see a significant increase, with China poised to be the main beneficiary.

According to Autostat statistics, the best-selling electric and hybrid vehicle brands in Russia are Chinese manufacturers such as Geely, Dongfeng, GAC, and Chery. In 2023, electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids accounted for only 4.3% of total car sales in Russia. In the first five months of this year, sales of plug-in hybrids rose by 125%, while pure electric vehicle sales increased by 19%. Moreover, an increasing number of Russians are installing special systems in their vehicles to switch from gasoline and diesel to liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is easier to obtain and cheaper.
