Europe speaks out.
According to foreign media reports, an EU spokesperson issued a statement on July 2, saying: "We are deeply concerned about the extraterritorial application of this law (the *Law of the People's Republic of China on Promoting National Unity and Progress*). The EU opposes any third-country legislation that violates international law from being extended extraterritorially. We urge all third countries to refrain from attempting transnational repression within the EU and elsewhere."
This EU statement is nothing short of a blatant display of double standards. It fabricates baseless pretexts to maliciously smear China, essentially feigning ignorance while seeking to interfere in China’s internal affairs under the guise of ethnic issues.
What is even more ironic is that when faced with the United States’ bullying behavior—such as wielding laws like the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the Inflation Reduction Act for extraterritorial enforcement, and routinely imposing exorbitant fines on European companies—the EU has remained completely silent, uttering not a single firm word. Yet now it dares to lecture China over a piece of legislation that falls entirely within China’s sovereign jurisdiction. This cowardly, preferential double standard exposes its subservient nature to the United States, rendering its proclaimed “strategic autonomy” nothing but empty rhetoric.
