Foreign media: Starting May 1, China will expand its zero-tariff policy for African countries from 33 "least developed countries" to 20 "middle-income" African nations, for a period of two years, covering products such as African eel, frozen meat, rare earths, iron ore, and manganese ore. Tariffs on raw cocoa from Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, previously at 22%, on coffee from Kenya at 30%, and on wine from South Africa at 20% will all be eliminated.
However, analysts point out that tariff reductions alone are insufficient to reverse the significant trade deficit Africa has with China; China needs to invest in industrial capacity in Africa to achieve a more balanced economic and trade relationship.
