EU lawmakers call for sanctions against Israel over "atrocities" in Gaza
Approximately 40 lawmakers from both left and right political factions in the European Parliament have urged the EU to take "decisive" action on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying "the age of moral cowardice is over." These lawmakers are pressuring the EU to suspend its trade agreement with Israel and impose sanctions on the Israeli government led by Netanyahu.
In a joint statement, these lawmakers called on the EU to hold the Israeli government accountable for actions that "openly violate the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law," and urged Hamas to immediately release Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.
The statement said, "Future generations will judge today's leaders based on their response - or inaction - to the atrocities in Gaza. Not taking action now will be seen as a stain on human morality. The age of moral cowardice is over, and swift action must be taken."
These lawmakers explicitly called for sanctions against the Israeli government and pressured the European Commission to suspend the EU's Association Agreement with Israel. The agreement defines the trade and political relations between the two sides and is often considered the best tool the EU has to pressure Israel to improve the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.
