UK Prime Minister's Office: UK Will Recognize Palestine as a State in September if Israel Does Not Halt the Conflict
The office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Tuesday that if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and does not take measures to stop the "terrible and horrifying" situation in the region, the UK will recognize Palestine's statehood at the UN General Assembly in September.
More than a dozen former British diplomats and UN staff wrote a letter on July 24 urging Starmer to recognize Palestine's statehood and take further measures against Israel due to the situation in the Gaza Strip.
The UK Prime Minister's Office document stated: "We are determined to uphold the viability of the two-state solution. Therefore, if the Israeli government does not take major measures to stop the terrible and horrifying situation in the Gaza Strip, and does not assume the responsibility, including ending hunger by restoring humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza through the opportunities provided by the United Nations without delay, to achieve a long-term stable peace, and if Israel temporarily does not agree to a ceasefire and does not explicitly state that it will not annex the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, then we will recognize Palestine's statehood at the UN General Assembly in September."
