[Text/Observer Network, Zhang Jingjuan] According to comprehensive reports from Yonhap News Agency and The Hankyoreh, US President Donald Trump stated on March 31 at the White House press conference that he had plans to contact North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump responded affirmatively when asked by reporters if there were plans to contact Kim Jong Un. He told reporters that he maintained a good relationship with Kim Jong Un, "Our relationship is very good. Yes, we have... communication. I think this is very important."

Trump referred to North Korea as a "nuclear power" and called Kim Jong Un "a smart person."

He recalled June 2019, when he crossed the military demarcation line into North Korea at Kim Jong Un's invitation. He said, "(I) know him very well. I remember putting my foot on the dividing line and crossing it."

Trump added that he might do something "at some point in time."

The report pointed out that Trump did not provide detailed information about possible communication, leading to various speculations. It remains unclear whether he was hinting at current informal contacts or reiterating past exchanges. Outside analysis suggests that Trump's latest statement implies that the United States may resume direct diplomacy with North Korea.

The report also mentioned the possibility of Trump and Kim Jong Un exchanging letters.

It is worth noting that Trump had previously stated in an interview with American media shortly after taking office in January that he would contact Kim Jong Un again. During his first term, Trump held multiple meetings with Kim Jong Un.

On June 12, 2018, Trump and Kim Jong Un held their first meeting between the leaders of the two countries in Singapore, discussing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and easing tensions between both sides.

The second "Kim-Trump Summit" was held in Hanoi, Vietnam from February 27 to 28, 2019.

On June 30, 2019, Trump met with Kim Jong Un again at Panmunjom, then crossed the military demarcation line, becoming the first sitting US president to set foot on North Korean territory since the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement.
