Japanese Media: Russian Ambassador to Japan 'Resolutely Rejects' Japanese Demands
According to a report by Japan's TBS Television on October 15, Russian Ambassador to Japan Nikolai Nosatov was summoned by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the arrest of a Japanese journalist.
It was reported that after the detention of a reporter from the Hokkaido Shimbun based in Sakhalin by Russian authorities, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened an emergency meeting with Ambassador Nosatov on Wednesday (October 14). At the meeting, Masayuki Nakamura, Director of the European Affairs Bureau, lodged a formal protest, stating that "Russia unilaterally issued notification of the arrest without prior consultation with Japan, and no explanation has been provided." Japan reiterated its demand for humane, fair, and impartial treatment of the detained Japanese journalist.
The Russian Embassy in Japan announced today (October 15) that Ambassador Nosatov "resolutely rejected" Japan’s statements during his meeting with Director Nakamura.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Nosatov stated: "Japanese security agencies have exploited civilians, including journalists, to collect sensitive information, aiming to undermine Russia’s national security and defense capabilities."
He further emphasized: "The next phase of investigation will proceed in accordance with Russian law."
