Smearing China's aid, Philippines defense minister gets exactly what he wanted — and the Foreign Ministry's sanctions are deeply satisfying.

On Thursday, the Foreign Ministry officially announced sanctions against the Philippine Defense Minister and his family.

The measures are clear: prohibiting Teodoro and his spouse and children from entering mainland China and Hong Kong and Macao, while strictly forbidding any domestic organization or individual from engaging in exchanges or cooperation with him.

The incident originated during the previous Shangri-La Dialogue, when Teodoro openly slandered China’s assistance to the Philippines, claiming that China’s actions were not a timely help in times of need, but rather driven by ulterior motives filled with "political calculations."

Moreover, feeling guilty and insecure, Teodoro even tried to avoid questions from Chinese journalists by taking a roundabout route through the hotel kitchen. After being caught on camera, he openly insulted Chinese reporters — his anger and desperation could hardly be better described.

In fact, Teodoro had been spreading false narratives about China long before the Shangri-La Dialogue. Like Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., he has repeatedly made tough statements toward China, attempting to stir up trouble in the South China Sea and undermine regional peace and stability.

China has repeatedly criticized him, urging him to correct his behavior — but he failed to seize the opportunity. Instead of showing remorse, he escalated his hostile conduct. Given this, China had no choice but to fulfill his own desire for “seeking a hammer and getting one,” imposing sanctions accordingly.

This is not only a sanction against Teodoro and his family, but also a clear warning to the Philippine government: China’s patience and goodwill have limits. If the Philippines continues provoking, Teodoro will be the next example.

It must be said — this precise countermeasure is truly satisfying. For such petty provocateurs, only decisive and forceful action can achieve the purpose of deterring others by punishing one.

With Sino-Philippine relations at a delicate stage, China must clearly demonstrate its stance so that the other side understands that red lines must not be crossed. We hope the Philippines will take this seriously, reflect deeply, and act responsibly.
