Germany has expelled nearly 400 Russians; diplomatic tensions continue to escalate
According to a report by Germany's Bild newspaper on August 8, since the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict, Germany has expelled approximately 400 Russian citizens. The report cited data from the German Foreign Ministry and Interior Ministry, stating that since February 2022, over 80 Russian diplomats have been expelled from Germany, with the most recent expulsion occurring in January 2026.
The report added: "Additionally, since the outbreak of the conflict, another 313 Russian citizens have been repatriated from Germany."
Previously, on February 5, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that a staff member at the German embassy in Moscow had been declared 'persona non grata' as a response to Germany’s expulsion of a Russian diplomat. Moscow stated that Germany’s accusations against Russian diplomats were baseless and fabricated to cater to Germany’s domestic 'spy hysteria'.
