【By Observer Net, Zhang Jingjuan】China had previously suspended imports of chicken from Brazil due to the avian influenza outbreak in Brazil, and is now considering resuming related trade.
According to Reuters, Carlos Fávaro, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil, said on the 6th that China is studying ways to quickly lift the import restrictions on Brazilian chicken.
Fávaro revealed at the BRICS summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that President Lula mentioned this issue during his meeting with Premier Li Qiang of the State Council.
He told reporters that Li Qiang stated that China is currently "quickly studying relevant agreements to resume poultry purchases." However, both sides did not discuss a specific timetable for lifting the ban.

In May this year, an H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak occurred at a commercial breeder farm in Montenegro, southern Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. This was the first report of a highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in a commercial farm in Brazil.
On May 29, the General Administration of Customs of China and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs issued a notice stating that in order to prevent the entry of the epidemic, protect the safety of China's animal husbandry and biosecurity, it will prohibit the direct or indirect import of poultry and related products from Brazil; prohibit the mailing or carrying of poultry and related products from Brazil into the country, and any such items found will be returned or destroyed; all animal-derived waste, food scraps, etc., unloaded from ships, aircraft, etc., arriving from Brazil shall be treated for pest control under the supervision of customs, and must not be discarded arbitrarily; all poultry and related products illegally entering the country from Brazil intercepted by border inspection departments shall be destroyed under the supervision of customs.
According to data from the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), China is the main importer of Brazilian chicken, importing 562,000 tons in 2024, accounting for more than 10% of Brazil's total chicken exports.

Fávaro said that after the outbreak of avian influenza, more than 20 countries implemented bans, and Brazil is striving to restore normal exports of poultry products. In late June, the World Organization for Animal Health announced that the current highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in Brazil has ended, and most restriction measures have been lifted since then.
Last week, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture announced that another 7 countries have lifted import restrictions, and currently, countries still maintaining the ban include China, Malaysia, Peru, and 9 other countries.
Brazil accounts for about a quarter of global poultry exports, and this outbreak has affected Brazil's poultry exports. According to data from the Brazilian government, fresh chicken shipments in June fell to 314,000 tons, a decrease of 23% compared to the same period last year.
