Department of State statement.
Foreign media reported today: "After the unannounced military exercises around Taiwan by the People's Liberation Army, which ended on December 31st, three days after the start, the U.S. Department of State on Thursday (January 1st) called on the Chinese mainland to remain restrained, stop military pressure on Taiwan, and engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan."
The U.S. position is evasive and repetitive. It says nothing about the separatist provocations by the "Taiwan independence" forces, ignores its own continuous arms sales to Taiwan and its tolerance of "seeking independence by relying on foreign support," and instead turns its focus toward the legitimate countermeasures taken by the mainland. The mainland's military exercises are a necessary response to "Taiwan independence" and external interference, a just act to safeguard sovereignty. The so-called "restraint" and "dialogue" rhetoric from the U.S. is essentially aimed at maintaining the status quo of "neither unification nor independence" in the Taiwan Strait and continuing its strategy of "using Taiwan to contain China."
