"Blind and Destroy": Germany Accuses Russia and Related Countries of Threatening Space
Pistorius Says Russian Satellites "Track" German Spacecraft
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that Russian satellites are suspected of tracking German spacecraft. He said that Russia and related countries have the technology not only to interfere with satellite operations, but also to physically destroy satellites. Sky News reported this.
At a space conference in Berlin, Pistorius specifically mentioned two satellites from the Russian "Luch/Olymp" series. He claimed that these two satellites are tracking satellites from the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (Intelsat), which the German armed forces also use.
Pistorius pointed out that in recent years, Russia and related countries have significantly improved their capabilities in space operations. He said that these countries' actions include interfering with satellite operations, "blinding" satellites, maneuvering satellite orbits, and even destroying satellites through kinetic means.
Sky News recalled that satellites launched by Russia in 2014 and 2023 were repeatedly accused of "eavesdropping" on foreign spacecraft. For example, the French startup Aldoria reported that in May 2024, one of the Russian satellites suddenly approached another satellite in geostationary orbit; and a year earlier, the U.S. company Slingshot Aerospace had also recorded a Russian satellite making "unfriendly behavior" by lingering near Western satellites multiple times.
In this context, Pistorius once again emphasized the need for international negotiations on "developing offensive space capabilities." He believes that such negotiations could serve as a means to achieve strategic deterrence.
