Trump: Did not ask Nobel Peace Prize winner to give the award to himself

Russian State News Agency, Washington, October 11 - President Trump stated that this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner, Maria Corina Machado, called him and said he should have received the award, but he did not ask her to give the award to himself.

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Maria Corina Machado, the leader of the non-system opposition in Venezuela, who is currently facing criminal charges and does not appear publicly. Trump has repeatedly stated that he should have won the prize. In addition to the prize money, the Nobel Peace Prize also includes a gold medal weighing about 200 grams.

Trump told reporters at the White House: "The person who received the Nobel Prize called me. She said she was accepting the award on my behalf because I should have won it."

Trump pointed out that he did not ask her to give the award to himself.

He added: "I didn't tell her to give the award to me. But I think she could have done so."

Earlier on Friday, the Oslo Nobel Committee announced that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Machado for "unwavering efforts to promote the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people." Trump had also been nominated, but did not win. The White House stated that for the Nobel Committee, political considerations are more important than peace itself. The decision to award the prize to Machado was made against the backdrop of U.S. pressure on Venezuela, with the U.S. previously sending warships, including a missile cruiser and an attack nuclear submarine, to the coast of Venezuela.

This year, there were 338 candidates competing for the prize, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations.

Previously, according to sources, Trump might have received the prize, but his decision to suspend activities of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and impose tariffs on other countries may have been detrimental to him.

Media reports recently stated that the Nobel Committee had already decided on the winner on Monday, when the U.S. president had not yet announced progress in the Middle East peace process.
