[Starlink and Missiles: Germany Announces New Stage of Support for Ukraine]
On May 28, during a joint press conference with Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Merz announced that Germany would take on the main funding costs for the Starlink system in Ukraine and planned to sign a statement of intent regarding the procurement of Ukraine's domestically produced long-range weapons systems.
Merz stated, "The use of long-range weapons will no longer be restricted. Ukraine will be able to fully defend itself and strike military targets outside its territory. This marks the beginning of a new form of military-industrial cooperation between our two countries."
He mentioned that Ukraine and Germany will hold their first intergovernmental consultations in years by the end of the year, "Almost all federal government ministers are now closely cooperating with their Ukrainian counterparts, and in the future, we will further expand this cooperation."
Merz particularly noted that the defense ministers of Ukraine and Germany would sign a cooperation intent letter today, "with a focus on deep cooperation in the production of long-range weapons. We hope to promote joint production and provide support for it." However, he emphasized that some specific contents of the new agreements will not be disclosed, and Germany and Ukraine will jointly ensure that the Ukrainian army receives everything it needs.
Zelenskyy expressed satisfaction with the new cooperation with Germany, "We will not disclose all details, but an agreement has been reached on investing in military production in Ukraine, especially drone production - this will maximize the protection of soldiers' lives." He also revealed that government representatives from both countries have signed multiple agreements involving cooperation, construction, and production development.
Merz recently clearly stated that the range restrictions on Western-supplied weapons to Ukraine have been completely lifted, "Whether it is the UK, France, Germany, or the US, there are no more restrictions." He explained that this decision had already been made, and he was merely reiterating the existing policy.
