Foreign media: Zhang Rujing, founder of SMIC, has called on China's semiconductor industry to focus on "pragmatic breakthroughs" in mature processes and specialty technologies, rather than blindly chasing the hype around advanced processes like 2nm.
He pointed out that mature nodes account for over 80% of global semiconductor demand and are crucial for "supply chain security." Zhang Rujing believes it is a misconception that industry competition hinges solely on advanced processes, and that success can only be achieved at 3nm or 2nm. He advises domestic startups to avoid direct competition with global chip giants and instead concentrate on distributed "edge AI" applications.
Now 78 years old, Zhang Rujing worked at Texas Instruments for 20 years before returning to China in 2000 to found SMIC.
