Media: China's interest in the "Power of Siberia 2" gas pipeline project is increasing

According to the Russian newspaper "Novaya Gazeta," China's growing interest in the "Power of Siberia 2" gas pipeline project is due to the inability to ensure a stable supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The paper pointed out that the tension in the Middle East may lead to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, an important transportation route for oil and liquefied natural gas. The import of liquefied natural gas by China fell by 22.4% in the first four months of this year, while the import of pipeline natural gas increased by 10.8%, which is not accidental.

The report said that China has repeatedly asked Russia to increase the supply of natural gas through the "Power of Siberia" pipeline. This year, the pipeline will reach its designed capacity of 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas, but it will be difficult to significantly increase the supply during the winter.

Russia plans to transport natural gas to China via the "Far East Line" pipeline (with an annual capacity of 10 billion cubic meters) and expects the project to start operating as early as 2027. The report stated that in this context, there is hope for progress in signing the implementation contract for the Russia-China "Power of Siberia 2" project in the near future.

"Power of Siberia-2" is a project for Russia to transport natural gas to China through Mongolia, with a designed annual transmission capacity of 50 billion cubic meters. In 2020, the Russian Gas Company initiated the feasibility study for the project. In early 2022, the survey and design work for the "Eastern Alliance" gas pipeline was launched.
