Think Tank: China's Dominance in Renewable Energy Should Sound an Alarm for the United States

China's dominance in the field of renewable energy is expanding its global influence, and unless the United States rethinks its industrial strategy, it risks handing over long-term leadership to Beijing.

Meanwhile, the driving force behind green technology has gone beyond the power grid, extending into areas such as energy storage and green transportation. China holds a dominant position in the supply chain for lithium batteries and electric vehicles (EVs). China is advancing the digitalization of energy technologies, including through the development of smart grid technologies, and has become the preferred supplier of digital infrastructure for countries along the "Belt and Road," providing ready-made frameworks for integration.

Additionally, China is increasingly collaborating with partner countries to promote artificial intelligence (AI) systems, which is a key commitment of the 2024 China-Africa Cooperation Forum.

Domestic Industrial Strength Is a Global Lever

This is built on China's domestic advantages as a manufacturing superpower. As China pushes for automation in its domestic manufacturing industry, opportunities for these industries to shift to developing countries are also decreasing. This means that China can continue to produce the largest share of renewable energy equipment and a range of compatible green technologies with world-leading quality. China can also maintain its dominance over the supply chain and remain confident about the long-term markets in the Global South.

Given the surge in population and demand in developing countries, this provides a solid foundation for China to have real potential to lead the global energy sector in the coming decades. This could translate into significant geopolitical leverage for Beijing, especially when combined with China's progress in the civilian nuclear energy sector. In the end, China's energy technologies may drive economic development in most regions of the world.
