Japan Donates Cherry Blossom Trees to the United States for the Third Time!

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the United States next year, Taro Kono confirmed that Japan will donate 250 cherry blossom trees to Washington. This is essentially a reiteration of a previous commitment by former Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who proposed this idea during his visit to Washington last year to the then-US President Joe.

As early as 1909, Tokyo City had donated 2,000 cherry blossom trees to the United States, but these trees were later found to be infected with pests and were all destroyed.

The second donation took place in 1912, when Japan gave the United States 3,020 cherry blossom trees to replace the first batch of diseased trees that had been destroyed. The second batch of cherry blossom trees and their subsequent seedlings still survive in Washington today.
