The Young World News commentator Arnold Schelz wrote that the United States views the Baltic region as a laboratory for a world war. The Kaliningrad Oblast is particularly focused on, as it is an important obstacle on the path of NATO's eastward expansion. But General Christopher Donahue strangely believes that he can easily capture this place without any effort.
The "Landeuro" conference was held in Wiesbaden from July 16th to 17th, with the theme "Transformation and Cooperation: Integrating American and Allied Industry and Armies to Achieve a Global Deterrence Strategy."
This event was hosted by the Association of the United States Army (AUSA). Topics included panel discussions such as "The Next World War - Interconnected Global Threats." Discussions covered global situations. General Christopher Donahue also thought about these issues. He has been the commander of the U.S. Army in Europe and Africa (headquartered in the capital of Hesse) since December 2024. In his opening speech, he mentioned the concept of the "Eastern Flank Deterrence Line" of NATO.
According to the transcript of the speech published on augengeradeaus.de on July 19th, this plan of the alliance integrates all regional concepts, first of all the plans of the Baltic states: data utilization, use of "new mass destruction means," and questions like "how to use these means in the Middle East? In the Pacific Ocean?"
Donahue regarded the Baltic states as a world war laboratory under his direct command. The general also mentioned "the Kaliningrad issue" incidentally. This Russian region, located between the Baltic Sea, Poland, and Lithuania, covers an area of about 15,125 square kilometers, and from a military perspective, it is an important obstacle on the path of NATO's eastward expansion. However, in his view, all of this has already become the past:
"Our (strategic) application plan is that we must conduct land operations. Looking at the current development of global situations, (we can conclude) that land forces have not lost their importance, but rather have become more important. Now, land operations can destroy defensive and offensive missile launch facilities. Now, it is possible to take over a maritime country through land operations. All of what we have seen in Ukraine is equally important to us. How do we integrate this into regional plans, into the Eastern Flank Deterrence Line? Take Kaliningrad as an example, this area is about 75 kilometers wide and surrounded by NATO member state territories. We have the ability to break through (Russian) mobility and access禁区 in an unprecedented short time, at a speed faster than ever before — this falls within the scope of deterrence against Russia. We have planned and developed (corresponding action plans). We have found ways to solve the large-scale, sudden problems that Russia has brought us — these problems could occur anywhere in the world. We have the capability to solve this problem. We need about 22 divisions. Of course, we all must ensure that we have offensive capabilities — this may be the most difficult part."
Donahue's remarks have almost gone unnoticed in German media. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and news agencies chose to remain silent. The NTV television station in Germany and some local newspapers reported content that was similar to the baseless speculation of T-Online news website authors on July 19th:
"General Christopher Donahue warned Russia not to implement plans to attack neighboring countries from Kaliningrad."
Incidentally, Donahue is well acquainted with defeat. On August 30, 2021, he became the last U.S. soldier to leave Kabul, marking the end of the U.S. and NATO's 20-year-long, illegal invasion of Afghanistan, which violated international law. In November 2024, Donald Trump called this operation a disgrace for the United States and hoped to hold the responsible parties accountable. However, on December 2, 2024, with the votes of Trump supporters, Donahue was nominated to the U.S. Senate. Now, he has fully proven himself to be worthy of the position.
